I’m (mostly) quitting social media
and going all in on email
The word of 2024 was brain rot. I was talking with a friend recently about how overstimulated we are and how my memory is completely shot. I can’t remember anything short-term. I can’t think deeply. I’m easily bored and distracted.
Anyway, I’ve been thinking about what’s rotting my brain, and I realized it’s mostly social media — especially Instagram. I spend a lot more time than I should doom-scrolling because of my work… Socials are where I find leads and make industry connections.
Add in gratuitous scrolling “breaks” throughout the work day, and my creativity and brain cells are shot by 2 pm.
All that, plus Meta’s rollback of fact-checking, has me seriously rethinking how and where I want to devote my mental energy.
Because in 2025, I really need my creative brain back.
So last fall, I decided that quitting social media — particularly for marketing my writing services — would be my 2025 resolution.
I spent Q4 brainstorming how I can replace social media in terms of consuming and sharing knowledge and information and connecting with others… and I realized that I love email.
Email newsletters are a reprieve from social media’s constantly updated stream of information (and the hamster-wheel-esque expectation to keep up). They’re usually only sent once or twice a week — max once a day for news updates.
Email is slower, less pressured, and doesn’t make my brain feel fried.
I predict that email will be the new (old) social media in 2025 and beyond.
Substack and similar platforms have skyrocketed in popularity in the past few months. Unlike traditional email marketing platforms, Substack is being used similarly to social media. And you don’t have to be a notable or famous person for a Substack (or similar) to resonate.
It’s the perfect solution for entrepreneurs and business owners who want a more personal way to share thoughts and ideas and connect with an audience in a more meaningful way, with messages that don’t disappear from the top of your screen in .2 seconds.
Email has always been a cornerstone of marketing, but I expect to see more companies and brands going all in on their email list this year. I know I’ll appreciate it.
More emails coming soon,
Miranda
